HIPPOS SLAY SPARTANSIn an epic tussle full of champagne rugby the Hippos once again triumphed. . The home side were clearly fearful of the Hippos strength as they lined up an army of 47 players all of whom took the field in an attempt to halt the Hippos progress. Fielding what amounted to be a development Hippos fifteen the team gave away their traditional first try to the opposition. Underwood the ever constructive skipper made a tactical decision to leave the young would be Hippo back row Mike Holmes on the bench and stick with the tried and badly tested Hippos old guard. Luckily debut Hippo Big Charlie, fresh from his recent grazing on the highveld of South Africa looked hungry for Spartans and opened the scoring by carrying three wailing Spartans on his back across the line to bring the Hippos back into contention. Spartans insisted on kicking for goal, failing to see the true spirit of Hippos rugby. Trainee senior scumbag Evan was then struck by the Spartans showy nine but before the ref had chance to intervene, Evan let the scrum half have a hippos salute and laid him horizontal on the pitch. The referee, true to Hippos spirit, gave a penalty against the Spartans for foul play. The first half was evenly contested as further tries were added by Charlie and Holmes. The latter had been tactically overlooked by the skipper in selection and once the newly appointed Hippos Director of Rugby, Boehmer intervened, Bournville’s prospects improved . The crowd gasped as McCall not only ran over the line but managed to catch the ball first breaking his hoodoo of previous Hippos appearances. After a spirtited team talk from the skipper, the Hippos moved on towards victory in the second half. Further Spartans legions came onto the pitch but the Hippos remained unnerved. With little time left on the clock Hippos won a rare clean ball and fed it to the skipper at ten deep in his twenty two. The forwards looked up to see his kick spiralling towards touch and hoping it was the end of the by going out of play. Alas, they had not banked on the skippers vision in placing it delicately into the hands of the Spartans quickest winger who haired towards the line. A combination of heroic hippos bundled him into touch leaving only time for the Hippos to gift an interception try before the game came to a victorious end. Senior Hippos were heard to say "Duncan who?" as the game ended. Other Hippos looked forward to the luxury accommodation of the Bridgnoth tour allowing another wallow before the season draws to an end. Match Reporter Gollum |
