Off the back of the previous 2 wins the Super Threes travelled to AOE feeling confident and ready for a tough, but winnable game against a team with a fair reputation of a hard playing bunch of gents. From the kickoff the threes looked an aggressive, structured and well drilled team. An early injury forced captain Ian Lowe on to the side, to be replaced by Pete Willetts, who also took on the role of captain on the pitch. Some superb work led to our first try, a hard worked piece of play by none other than Danny Hughes, was pounced on over the try line by Luke Mosley. Converted by Golden Boot Joy. Our second and third were by Jason Hammond recently returning from a couple of weeks absence. One was set up by the previous scorer Mosley on our own 22m line which Hammond then ran in around two or three of their players. All our tries were converted by Brendan. In the last five minutes, due to a magnificent penalty kick from the man himself ten metres from the halfway mark, put us in the lead, 24-19, leaving AOE a try behind. Two minutes from time AOE were awarded a scrum five metres from our try line. No.9 Jim Tumelty was about to put the ball in when it hit the oppositions prop and bounced back out. The referee, who had been fair up until this point, despite being in plain view of this, failed to blow the whistle and AOE scored a try in the corner. Their 9, whose kicking had been neither here nor there, decided he didn’t need a tee, and dropped it straight through the middle of the posts. Bournville walked off the pitch with their heads held high. We played a brilliant game and we were just unlucky. All I can say is it was a ‘moral’ victory and if we keep this up we will have a VERY good season.
