| Bournville 29 - 7 Ludlow, Saturday 28th November 2009 |

Bournville's second team took the field aiming to halt the slide that has seen them lose their unbeaten record with some below par performances in the last two weeks. In heavy conditions they faced a Ludlow team who had proven worthy and physical opponents in their last contest. The men in maroon started brightly, with good tactical kicking and excellent driving play from the forwards, they quickly asserted an advantage in the contact area. With Andy Tams and Simon Andrews providing forward momentum in the Ludlow 22 and resident import Chris Humphrey pulling the strings, it wasn't long before Jonny Richards, who had chased kicks all day long with insatiable tenacity, was rewarded by slick handling in the backs to cross for the first score of the game. Ludlow responded well and put Bournville under pressure with their powerful number 8 running hard into the 22. The referee then made some interesting decisions about handling on the floor and gave a penalty against prop Rhydian Smith for being "too strong in the scrum". Continuing their pressure, Ludlow took advantage of Bournville's uncanny ability to upset every ref they come across and some strong running combined with poor tackling in midfield let them in for a score to take the lead. Bournville responded well, using their lineout to good effect driving up the field and executing some good phase play - number 8 Ben Boyce in particular had some good carries – which resulted in the huge centre, Steven Rice cutting a great line to put him in the clear to put Bournville back on top. Half Time: Bournville 12 - Ludlow 7 After some stern words on discipline at half time, Bournville continued to produce good ball at the back of the breakdown despite the conditions and Humphrey took advantage at every opportunity to make breaks across the gain line. The Bournville pack were rewarded for holding their own against a revitalised Ludlow scrum with a penalty that Jacobs dispatched into the corner. Efficient line-out work from Tams and Andy Richards produced a driving maul that Boyce downed over the line to stretch Bournville's lead. The superiority of possession was beginning to tell and Bournville were turning the screw. Another excellent kick from Jacobs gave the forwards the opportunity to get a drive on. Bradley and Smith combined at the line-out to clean up scrappy ball and Humphrey fed Boyce who barreled over for his second. Perhaps taking their foot off the gas, as has happened all year, Bournville found themselves on the defensive for most of the rest of the game. Ludlow hammered away with big runners but time and time again Bournville repelled the attacks, countering when opportunity arose and putting Alex McCall away for a great score following an excellent break. Some big hits from Rice and great work on the floor from Andrews and returning impact player Craig O'Donnell kept Ludlow at bay. With Bournville frustrating them, certain members of the Ludlow side found themselves losing their temper, culminating in an altercation between Boyce and Ludlow's youngest player which ultimately resulted in red cards for both. This did not take the shine off the game as Bournville held out to be worthy winners. Having arrested their slump of the last few weeks, they will be looking to finish the league strongly in the same dominant way they started the season. Final Score: Bournville 29 - Ludlow 7 Man of the Match: Chris Humphrey |
