With thoughts and memories of Harry Tempest, both teams took a minutes silence before kick off on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Rowheath. With only 15 men (and no substitutes) Bournville set a fast pace early on in the game. With plenty of strength in the pack they headed into the opposition half and were awarded 2 penalties early on, through Redditch not managing to keep good discipline at the ruck, converted by Nicholas Peck. This only seemed to spur Bournville on, as soon after, Jonny Richards came off the right wing to make a devastating run through the centre of the Redditch defence. Keeping his eyes open he passed outside him to Nicholas Peck coming through in support who took the outside line to score the first try of the match, converted by Nicholas Peck. Aiming for more, Bournville had a good lineout inside the Redditch 22. With the forwards driving forward, the ball was spun wide to the backs only 5m out. Scoring Bournville’s second try, Nicholas Peck cut back inside to finish a great team effort, converted by Nicholas Peck Just before the half time whistle, Bournville lost concentration and knocked the ball on. This allowed Redditch to capitalise from the home sides mistake scoring under the posts and converting. Half Time Score: Bournville 20 Redditch 7 Bournville still seemed to be off the boil at the start of the second half. Some silly errors resulting in a penalty meant that Redditch kicked for a line out inside the Bournville 22. The home side seemed a little disorganised and Redditch punished the lack of communication with another try. Bournville picked themselves up and started to take control of the game again. With a pack working as a single unit they drove a path into the opposition 22. Quick thinking from the half backs, Lee and Paul Jacobs, they whipped the ball wide quickly. Displaying quick hands through the centres, Jonny Richards was able to receive the ball and score the try. After very narrowly missing a drop goal (in front of the posts) Peck scored his hat trick following some beautiful running from the left wing, Mike Holmes. Receiving the ball in open play on the half way line, he carved through the centre of the Redditch defence, cutting across the pitch and finally slipping the scoring pass inside, to be finished under the posts by Peck. Michael Charnley, not wishing to out done by the other three-quarters, took a fantastic line from full back in the final few minutes of the match to score under the posts, converted by Paul Jacobs. As the blow of the final whistle came there was sense that Bournville had done Harry Tempest proud. Final Score: Bournville 39 Redditch 12
