BOURNVILLE RUGBY CLUB MOURNS THE LOSS OF HARRY TEMPEST

Bournville Rugby Club are mourning the passing away of Harry Tempest, a former club captain and chairman, who finally lost his battle against cancer on Saturday 12th September.

Harry was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in November 2006. As one would expect, he battled the illness all the way, undergoing three operations and chemotherapy/radiology treatments. Harry was a resident at St Mary’s Hospice in Selly Oak when he passed away peacefully in his sleep at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Harry, a Cadbury chocolate worker since leaving school, has been a permanent fixture at Bournville Rugby Club for more than 35 years. During this time, he has touched the hearts of many, both on and off the pitch. He most proudly captained the club in 1990, 1991 and 1994 as well as holding the posts of Chairman, Hon. Secretary and Fixtures Secretary. As a hooker, he will be best remembered for his fully committed style of rucking rugby! Off the pitch, he believed that you should always have a pint with your opposite number after every game.

Bournville R.F.C. Chairman, Ivor Boehmer, commented, “Everyone at the club is clearly devastated after hearing the tragic news. He was a true Bournville legend and will leave a massive gap in our lives. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Harry is survived by his wife, Nicky, and three year old daughter, Amelia.
