Bournville Rugby Club Celebrates It's Centenary

In September 1909, 22 Cadbury Chocolate employees and members of Bournville Athletic Club formed a rugby section and founded Bournville R.F.C. Donning the chocolate coloured shirts and long white shorts, they played their opening game against Aston Old Edwardians and lost narrowly, 9 points to 3. 100 years on, the club is now open to non Cadbury employees (which was a qualifying condition until the early 1970's) and fields four men’s teams, 8 mini/junior sides and a Women’s XV.

Still based at Rowheath Pavilion, the club has enjoyed a minor renaissance over the past few years and has slowly climbed up through the leagues. The men’s 1st XV will, this coming season, be competing in Midlands West 1 against the likes of Stoke, Dudley K, Burton and Sutton Coldfield.

The Club’s centenary celebrations kick off on 19th September with a Gala Dinner at the Burlington Hotel. A Vice Presidents Day is then being held on the 24th October where Bournville Vets’ Team (aka The Hippos) will play Aston again, followed by a league match against local rivals, Old Halesonians.

A Centenary Easter Tour to Cardiff is being organised and a Family Fun Day held in late April 2010. The season will then close with the club’s annual dinner on 22 May 2010.

Ivor Boehmer, Chairman of B.R.F.C. commented, “We are clearly proud to still be thriving after a hundred years of rugby and to have developed into a community rugby club for all age groups, both male and female. Long may it continue!”
